01 / Built from the inside

Experience behind every lesson.

Not every K-9 school is built by someone who has actually run a patrol dog. Founder and owner Chris Norman spent years as a patrol K-9 handler for the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office, running K-9 Tango through real operational deployments.

When Tango retired, Chris became BCSO's K-9 Coordinator, overseeing the agency's K-9 program, handler development, and the decisions that kept the unit operational and certifiable. In 2024, he brought that handler and coordinator experience into the professional training facility Idaho Elite K-9 is today.

Built from the inside of law-enforcement K-9 work, by someone who has held the leash, managed the unit, and knows the difference between training that looks good on paper and training that works on the street.

02 / Handler courses

Build the team, not just the skill.

Every handler who completes an Idaho Elite K-9 course leaves with more than a certification. They leave understanding how their dog thinks, communicates, and works at its best, because that is what matters at 2 a.m. on a track or in a courtroom the following week.

Theory and practical instruction run side by side throughout every course. We don't hand you a dog and tell you to figure it out. We build the team.

Patrol and apprehension work anchors the program: 240 hours building handler control, drive development, bite mechanics, and off-leash reliability under stress. Detection covers odor imprinting, indication development, and search patterns across vehicles, buildings, and open areas for narcotics or explosives, depending on the agency's mission. Tracking develops the dog's ability to work human scent trails across varying terrain and real-world conditions.

Curriculum also includes case law, documentation standards, and the handler education needed to stand behind your K-9's work in court.

Build from odor imprinting through fully proofed search patterns, including passive and active indication development, vehicle and building searches, open-area deployments, and the documentation and legal standards that make your dog's nose admissible. A single-purpose detection dog is a precision tool. We build it that way.

03 / K-9 selection

Your dog or ours.

Whether you're sourcing a new K-9 through Idaho Elite K-9 or bringing a dog you already have, we have a pathway for your team.

Source a working dog

Select a K-9 through Idaho Elite K-9

Finding the right dog for patrol or detection work means matching drives, temperament, and working ability to the mission and handler. Idaho Elite K-9 sources and vets K-9 candidates with the same eye Chris developed evaluating dogs for law-enforcement placement.

Handler-owned dogs welcome

Bring your own K-9

Handler-owned dogs are welcome in both dual-purpose and single-purpose detection programs. Your dog follows the same curriculum as every other candidate; we build the team around your existing relationship.

Every handler-owned candidate must pass a formal selection evaluation before enrollment. It assesses drives, temperament, nerves, and overall working suitability. Program admission is contingent on passing.

K-9 Detection Handler Legal Course

The legal side of K-9 deployment is where careers get protected and prosecutions get made or lost. This course covers the legal framework surrounding K-9 evidence: deployment documentation, handler testimony standards, search-and-seizure considerations for narcotics and explosive detection, and how to put your K-9's work on the record and make it hold up. Built for handlers who take their responsibility to the case as seriously as they take their dog's training.
